We’re really interested in the iPhone Fund that Kleiner has created and we’ve done some work on a number of prototypes, however, we’re still waiting to hear word from Apple and Steve J on whether or not music-related apps will be allowed on the iPhone..
It reasons that Apple makes more money on the iPhone than it does on the iTunes store, so perhaps they would slightly cannibalize their iTunes sales to drive more iPhone purchases.
But say Apple decides that it wants complete control over the iPhone Apps, then will …

John Beezer, the co-founder of Weedshare, whose company is now on the auction block is giving up some suggestions on how they should have done Weedshare for the potential purchasers, and the ideas he’s floating sound awfully similar to the model we’re building at Grooveshark.
Here’s a sample of his suggestions from p2pnet:
Lesson learned: even benign DRM is a bad idea. All forms of friction must be eliminated for authorized file sharing to work.
In Grooveshark, all files are DRM-free in the highest bit-rate available, the way it should be.

In an interesting turn, one of the most successful (relatively speaking) self-made, unsigned artists, Birdmonster signs a record label deal with Fader, as in the magazine turned A&R.

Chris Anderson of The Long Tail fame has a great interview with him in which he asks a number of interesting questions, especially considering on his last interview, Birdmonster was so unabashedly unsigned and loving it:

Say I buy …

One of my biggest complaints about files that aren’t tagged correctly is that they don’t carry the correct album art. iTunes has a built-in system, but often it has trouble when songs are missing apostrophes or slightly mis-spelled, and over time, your library becomes cluttered with random tracks that have no album art and just look like shit.

Grooveshark is taking these songs that are improperly tagged, and correcting the tags. Also, it is going in and adding in missing elements, like album art, album artist, and basically any other ID3 …

Part of our Grooveshark groups project, we have all been divided up into kick-ass teams of 5 or so, and we’re finally now enacting all of our 3 week long projects.
For Valentine’s Day, we’re giving UF students free $10 in music, conveniently contained in a Valentine’s Day card, which will be taped to the bottom of their chair. They’ll sit down at their desk, read the note, find the card, and BAM! instant satisfaction :)

With Moneyshark rolling out, our labels are finally starting to get paid (remember “everbody gets paid?“). We’ve crafted up some slick packets that will be going out in the coming weeks, and we’ll be rolling out Moneyshark to labels as the product is tested and debugged.
2008 will be the year of Grooveshark.
