Facebook is becoming more and more valuable as a company as the 5 year old company evolves. According to Inside Facebook’s latest figures, the number of women over 55 on Facebook is almost double the number of men of the same age.

What Does This Mean For Marketers?

While formerly only seen as a network for teens and college students, Facebook’s more expansive user base gives marketers a bigger target for their advertisements.

If you’re looking to run CPA campaigns, you might have a chance with campaigns for mortgage loans, loan modifications, and even dentures.

For those of you using Facebook as a marketing-platform, have you been able to cash in on this new demographic makeup?

MySpace is already maxed out of advertising, but Facebook has not even begun to integrate in advertising yet, but how quickly are we going to see that change, and how much pressure can investors exert on the Facebook management team?

If anything, this is a message to startups that are focusing on growth with no idea on a business model (Twitter).

Facebook, in its effort to continually update their service has released a version 2.0 of their iPhone app and now a revamped landing page.

Facebook’s original landing page and the new one, isn’t much to look at, and really isn’t that much different than the old version. So why the change?

A Thousand Words

Pictures really do speak a thousand words, as we saw from our recent coverage of the 4 most influential pictures of the 2008 election.

The switch here to the new homepage really is about tweaking the overall message for Facebook and a hint at their new strategy.

The old Facebook landing page focused on features, you can go on Facebook and look at pictures, meet friends, yadda yadda yadda.

Facebook has grown to the point where they no longer have to spell out the ‘features’. For every good site, you shouldn’t have to spell out your features, they should be immediately apparent when looking at the site, otherwise you’re doing something wrong.

I’m a big proponent of including little to no ‘help’ sections for users, because good UI design should little to no confusion for the user. And for those people who still are at a loss, when it comes to the great designed sites, stick to a typewriter.

China, Meet Facebook

The new Facebook landing page focuses on branding Facebook as an International utility. With more than a billion people in China, and China already reaching the US-level of online users, it’s no wonder Facebook wants to tap into this market.

Ambitions for Facebook extend well beyond keeping fraternities connected in college, they want to replace your LinkedIN network (how they plan on doing this, I’m not sure yet), but it’s obvious by this new homepage that the goal is to go global, fast.

You Need To Collect This From Your Users!

For naive web-entrepreneurs, often the easiest pieces can be missed. Facebook, from day one, has had this covered. They ask you when you were born, as it made sense to determine what college year you were in, how old you are, etc.

For a lot of sites that don’t focus solely on social activity, knowing someone’s age isn’t that important, but it’s imperative if you plan to build an advertising business around your site.

Advertisers are looking to reach specific demographics when they advertise. Young, high-spending females or young males age 18-35, regardless of the demographics you have on your site, the most important factor is actually knowing who your users are.

Knowing your demographics enables you to better target advertising and then reap the rewards of higher-paying CPM dollars, meaning more money in your pocket.

So for your next site, or for your current site, be sure to include this vital demographic signup information. If you don’t know how to use the information yet, just store it in your database, you never know when you may need it in the future.

Let us know your tips you’ve learned from other sites on the web.

When you were growing up, did you love to play with dumptrucks and backhoes? Well, an entrepreneur in Colorado Springs has created an adult playground that lets you live out your wildest childhood dreams. Startup ideas can come from anywhere, and owner Ed Mumm, discovered a great concept in simply clearing some land for a new development.

Ed Mumm was planning to build a house in Steamboat Springs and was doing some work on his own private property and was having so much fun that he thought other people would like to pay to have this type of fun, and that’s when he thought of the idea for Dig This. At Dig This, you can rent a giant bulldozer, escavators, and just about any other heavy machinery and toy around for a couple of hours for about $350.

Startups Ideas: Lemons out of Lemonade

Turning lemons into lemonade is the old adage when it comes to turning a bad situation into something worthwhile, and enjoyable, but it doesn’t just apply to bad situations. In this case, Ed was just planning to build a home for his family out in Steamboat Springs. He found an opportunity in his daily duties and decided to capitalize on it.

The majority of entrepreneurs start a company based on prior experience at an old company. Mark Zuckerberg was supposed to be building a social network for his school, Harvard, when he got the idea to create Facebook. Zuck’s not the only entrepreneur to come from working a previous job, but he’s just one example of an entrepreneur taking advantage of an opportunity to startup a company.

Are there any current initiatives you’re leading at your current job that would make a great independent business? Anything you’re doing for fun that would be a great business? Be careful, however, if you’re leaving a previous job and plan to take their intellectual property. Companies are investing in you, and if you go someplace else and take their technology, you better plan on working out some kind of arrangement with your previous employer of you’ll end up paying for it in the long run.

Good luck with your innovation, and let us know any other great inspirations for companies you’ve heard recently–

Julie Zhou from facebook has made the announcement that they will be offering a profile cleanup tool, that will help devoid Facebook of the clutter from all the random useless apps that sorority girls and guys, litter their profiles with.

This announcement was probably obvious to everyone, but it’s a nice coincidence for me since I just did the 15 questions from a facebook early user where I asked for this exact feature, well, almost exact. Take a look below from Facebook’s release and my post.

Facebook’s

The “profile clean-up” tool is compared to how a “computer’s desktop will remind you to get rid of unused icons” (note here, Facebook is comparing themselves to Windows) that will allow users to move profile boxes to an “extended portion” of their profile.

Andrew Wise’s

What do you think of the Facebook user interface? The biggest feature they should add is the ability for me to view people’s pages without the annoying widgets or whatever you call them.

So while doing my normal morning log on to Amazon to check out the hot deals, I was greeted by a set of familiar faces: Dwight, Angela, Jim, Pam, and Ryan (so hot). I personally use the digital tax filing services offered by TaxCut or whatever the brand name is, so I’m already sold on the idea, but this ad really makes me want to use the products or at least makes the filing process not so bad. I kind of consider tax products like toothpaste: I use something with a C, not sure if it’s Crest or Colgate, just whatever packaging looks the prettiest.

From the ad, I guess you’re supposed to pick what type of filer you are, but since I figured Dwight’s monologue would be the best, I opted to choose a ‘fancy filer’, and here’s what Dwight has to say:

Dwight Schrute Profile: Fact: You’ve got a full-time job and an inherited family business and a burgeoning side project in the agritourism field (permits are pending). Fact: You’re going to need to account for your extra income or losses (because your cousin Mose can’t possibly guarantee the beet farm will turn a profit). Fact: The right tax software will help you get through even the most intricate tax return–alone and on your own time over a bowl of Count Chocula–without ever having to divulge private information.

So after taking the Facebook questionnaire yesterday, I am drawn to the advertising section. Here’s the question and my response:

What do you think of Facebook advertising? Do you find Facebook ads more relevant than other online ads? Ha! Facebook advertising is the worst. However, with the integration into the feed I have found certain ads not so bad. I mainly use the ads as a way of telling what new movies and TV shows are out. Perhaps if Facebook linked new movies/tv shows up to reviews, they might be more valuable.

Now, how do the adds on Facebook contrast with this, well, they suck. I doubt Amazon showed me this add because I have copies of The Office in my shopping cart, but rather I think it’s just a matter of Amazon having a better, more developed advertising department that knows what ads will work, and helps to create products that will get the message across best. That, or I’m just a sucker for anything with The Office in it — especially given this horrendously protracted writer’s strike.

By the way, I used Hulu this weekend to watch old episodes of The Office and it was a wonderful experience!

BASICS

When did you first become a Facebook user?I opened a Facebook account my sophomore year of college in June 2004. We were one of the first 20 or so colleges, University of Florida, with a Facebook account and being that it was summer, not too many people were on Facebook.

Along with a couple of my friends, we spent the majority of our time looking at hot girls, and exchanging pokes (well poking girls and not getting poked back), and trying to determine if a girl was hot from her one picture; “her neck is fat, that’s how you can tell,” “if it’s just a picture of their face, that’s a bad sign,” “she lists chocolate as an interest…”.

What are your typical activities on Facebook? Now I mostly use Facebook for staying in touch with my friends that have moved on. I am still in my college town, working at a startup and find it hard sometimes to stay on top of everything. I occasionally view photos, but mostly find Facebook overwhelming.

What is the social impact of Facebook? Facebook is basically an always-on AIM, AOL Instant Messenger. Before, if you wanted to talk to someone, you had to wait for them to sign on AIM, and then you had the tentative moments of girls signing on and IMing you and you getting all excited and also having them sign on, stay on for a few minutes and you IM they as they sign off and you feel like a moron — ah, the good ‘ol days

Now you can stalk people regardless of if they’ve signed on, and you can browse their pictures and realize how ugly their friends are or how drunk they get, quite fun stuff. Also, before Facebook, nobody had an email box, so if you wanted to reach them you had to call them or hope to catch them on AIM. Now with the pseudo mailboxes on Facebook, you can drop people notes and more easily stay connected with those friends of yours that don’t use email.

FUNCTIONALITY

What Facebook features you could not live without? I think the photos are probably the key feature that I enjoy the most. It allows me to sit back, relax and either get a little emo or LOL at when you see ridiculous pictures. My friends like to use pictures as a forum as well, starting 150 long comment strings on pictures we particularly like or don’t like Also I’d say messaging and poking are two of the crucial features that truly set Facebook apart from the other social networks, with their ability to contact people in different ways.

What features do you wish Facebook had? Honestly, I wish I had more easy control over the content I receive in my news feed, and more control over the connections I have to people. Originally, when I added people as friends, I wish there were options to control my degree of connection to people. The whole ‘how do you know this person’ doesn’t sit well with my generation, and I find whenever somebody prompts me with that question, it’s almost insulting. What do you mean you don’t remember how you know me? We hooked up! …joking!

What do you think of the Facebook user interface? Facebook has definitely been improving their interface with additional use of Ajax, simplifying menus, navigation, controls. The biggest feature they should add is the ability for me to view people’s pages without the annoying widgets or whatever you call them.

How did the Facebook platform changed enhance your usage of Facebook? Facebook Platform? What’s that? The annoying applications and everything? It seems like it gave my friends more reasons to waste time and not focus on getting rich, so that’s a plus for me. Some of the applications are useful, like Picnik for photo editing and the event management stuff, but for me, I’m more of a peanut butter jelly guy than a triple mocha whipped frappaccinno. (sp?)

Do you have a lot of applications installed? How about your friends? I have like 5 applications installed, all of which were installed in the early days when I thought it would be cool to list my drinks — I chose like pina colada or something ridiculous for fun, but after being bombarded with 8,000 invitations to be a vampire, it got old real fast. I’m too lazy or it’s too hard to disable the notifications, so now I check my Facebook once a week and just clear out the messages.

My friends have a lot of applications, Jetman being particularly popular. But to me the game sucks, maybe I’m too old or “mature,” but I just feel like I’m wasting my time. By the way, I’m not too old at all, I’m young, 23.

PRIVACY

Do you trust Facebook with your personal information? What is Facebook going to do with it? If I say I like pizza in my profile, and I get 50 more offers for Pizza, isn’t that what I want? Yes. The only time things like this turn bad is when you receive stuff you don’t want, and if there’s no limit to the moderation: enter facebook applications.

What have you seen that people have shared that you found out of line? Nothing really, I’m never one to judge. I personally find it ridiculous that businesses look on people’s Facebook to determine if someone will be a good ‘job candidate’. Unless they have pictures of themselves at Michael Vick’s dog camp or waiving Confederate flags, let kids be kids and have fun. In fact, isn’t getting drunk what these executives do at their last Christmas party?

What sort of things would you hesitate to share? Your true feelings. Facebook is so sensationalist, if you post anything that offers a true picture of yourself, you can be open to all sorts of “what’s wrong, blah blah, etc.”.

ADVERTISING / SHOPPING

What do you think of Facebook advertising? Do you find Facebook ads more relevant than other online ads? Ha! Facebook advertising is the worst. However, with the integration into the feed I have found certain ads not so bad. I mainly use the ads as a way of telling what new movies and TV shows are out. Perhaps if Facebook linked new movies/tv shows up to reviews, they might be more valuable.

Facebook ads are like ads on TV, nobody pays attention to them because they’re on TV or Facebook, only if they resonate to them. If you’re seeing ads on your favorite blog, you draw a personal connection to the ads because of the medium, Facebook is just too mainstream.

Would you purchase books, movies, or music if you saw that your friends bought them? If my friends purchase something they like, they’ll tell me about it. If I see they buy a book, and don’t mention it to me, it means the book probably sucks. Consumers naturally want to tell other people about the cool things they buy, it gives them a feeling of satisfaction and is a reward in and of itself.

THE LONG TERM IMPACT

Would you still use Facebook after you graduate? I just graduated in May of 2006 and have definitely decreased my Facebook usage, but this may have to do with the fact that I have a girlfriend and all of my free time is spent with her, but with people splitting apart Facebook loses its core utility of connecting you with the people around you.

Would you be comfortable using Facebook to connect with your co-workers? Again, this goes back to my original point about employers looking poorly upon Facebook. If you want to be successful at your job, you have to get along with the people around you, and connecting on Facebook is a good start.

Where will Facebook be in 5 years? Facebook will probably never morph into Linkedin unless they can figure out a way to segment people into different groups. As of now, I look to Linkedin for people who are more business-minded and looking to network. Facebook is basically a hodgepodge ranging from the town moron up to your CEOs, but that huge range makes navigating and trying to use Facebook as a utility very difficult and frustrating. Facebook does have all of the connections I need in my personal life, so if they can find a way to interlink these connections into every application and device I use from my cell phone to my GPS, that would be pretty damn cool.

Conclusion After completing this survey, it probably makes me want to use Facebook even less as I just think about all of the stupid application requests sitting in my inbox and me trying to avoid. Oh well, Facebook, I haven’t deleted my account yet and probably never will, so rest assured, you still have a special place in my heart since the time we first met over 3 years ago <3
