Google Buys reCaptcha To Help With Book Digitization

Talk about crowdsourcing. Google has acquired reCaptcha, the popular anti-spam mechanism that uses scans of old documents as the verification words for filling out forms.

This is truly the power of micro-actions. Every user inputs 2 words taken from some old book and transcribes it as verification. With the strength of Google’s network, this will most likely convert into 2 words translating hundreds of thousands of novels everyday.

It's not always a reliable service. For $2 an article you are going to get a crappy half original content and no name to attach behind it. Plus you might be given the wrong info when it comes to testing. People will give you the kind of info you want just to get the hit, not necessary the truth.

I think it's a useful service, but not to that extent.
