TiVo, Slingbox, Should have been 2 in the Same

What’s the line from Good to Great about doing one thing really well, as opposed to trying to be all things to all people?

Oh yeah, Tivo isn’t great, and never will be. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve owned a Tivo, and think they’re pretty cute, but when you put the numbers to the paper, their “services” don’t justify the huge price tag over conventional DVRs from your cable provider.

Hmm.. Tivo, you’re a set-top box that’s connected to the Internet, can anyone think of a company that was just purchased for some $300 million?

Yes, Tivo, if you’re going to expand your offerings, don’t give us more digital music channels, give us Place-shifting technology, give us the ability to access our stored TV shows remotely (on all platforms), and then maybe your share price won’t be so damn pathetic.

And let this be a lesson to all those companies contemplating going public right now, don’t be greedy/stupid (Vonage, Napster, to name a few).
