Startup: Japanese ISPs to Pull the Plug on P2P

In an effort to curb P2P usage, Japanese ISPs are taking steps to first warn P2P users of excessive usage, and then disconnected. I’m not 100% positive on how the business model works, but I’m wondering if these disconnected users would then be asked to find internet service elsewhere.

If it is in true that P2P users cost the ISP more money, then this step will make sense. The only issue I have is if users are cut off from their ISP and then have no place else to turn for high-speed access. Given this is taking place in Japan and everybody is neighbors, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem. For the US, however, it could raise some hairy issues.

In our neighborhood, we are only serviced by Cox cable, so if Cox shuts us out, we’re pretty much SOL.

How do you guys feel about this? Is this a good or bad idea?
