Personally I’m not that big a fan of baseball, but more I’m a fan of ESPN, and they sometimes play baseball, so I watch it, and the highlights.
Something caught my eye today, with the whole announcement by A-Rod that he will opt-out of his contract with the Yankees, and the day the announcement was made was, coincidentally, the day of the World Series when the Bo Sox won.
I thought this was kind of shady, but after hearing Scott Boras’ explanation, I was floored by his strategery.
Essentially, what Boras said was that they sent a private memo to the Yankees on Sunday, and that it was inevitably leaked by the press, and subsequently picked up by Fox and ESPN. It was probably a mistake on his part to send the memo on Sunday, and he apologized, and said that his client had no knowledge of the memo or the timing, hence protecting his client.
This is a great way to handle this situation, as it basically puts all of the blame on Boras and his manuvering, possibly also drawing some attention to the Yankees as well. All while his client, A-Rod, stays in the clear free to pick up another $300 million contract.
