Howto Be Productive in Google Reader with RSS Feeds

I’m a workaholic that also tries to balance in family life, but that’s no easy task.

To ensure I have the most amount of time to spend with those I love most, I have to maximize my effectiveness when I am working (pretty much always).

Part of this involves creating workflows, shortcuts, and time-saving techniques (also reading great howtos like this one) !

I’ve always been a keyboard guy and can type upwards of 90wpm, I can prove it on those typing tests, however, I’m more of a sprinter and tend to go really fast and then kind of slow down a little, you know, to keep pace.

Being an avid keyboard user, I often find it annoying having to take my hands away from the keyboard and slow myself down by using the mouse, trackpad etc.

Welcome to the world of keyboard shorcuts, and Google Reader

When using Google Reader, I can have access to all of the keyboard shortcuts right from the comfort of my already resting hand position.

(load up shortcuts “shift+/”)

Go to the main page with all my feeds – “g then a”

I can hide the menu bar – “u”

Scroll through each feed – “j down, k up”

Star items – “s”

Going through with the J and K feature are a big time-saver, and it allows me to skim through all of my feeds really easily.

If I see something that peaks my interest, I’ll slap an “S” on it, and keep going through my feeds.

Once I’m at the end of the feeds, I’ll go back to my starred items “G then S” and peruse my selections.

From there, I can email “e” items to my friends, tag them “t” or share “s+shift” them.
