Apple and AT&T have been struggling with unlocking for as long as the iPhone has been around. Finally, with their announcement today of a 3G iPhone in 2008, they are on the right track.
The way to keep users in your system is to offer a highly compelling experience. Apple and their hardware is top of the line, and the reason so many of their users stick to their gear is because of the experience. My iPod works seamlessly with my Macbook Pro, and my Macbook Pro streams all of my music through my Airport Express.
I could easily build a Hackintosh box and run OSX, however, I wouldn’t get the same experience, and to get this experience I’m willing to pay more money.
Hacking the 3G iPhone is Pointless
If I hack the new iPhone, what will I have? I will have a phone that can be used on any network, and in the US, that means I can use it on T-Mobile. Well, what does T-mobile currently offer? EDGE. And isn’t EDGE the reason so many iPhone users, including myself are complaining?
So for me to get the complete, fully-justified experience of my 3G iPhone, I will have to stay with AT&T and pay their ridiculously high fees, experience their crappy service in my area, but also get 3G speeds !
…I definitely think the 3G speeds are worth it, and I think I may see myself switching back to an iPhone when it does get released
