I’m the type of guy that goes from one fad to the next, normally with me mastering each of these fads.
Probably the earliest fad I was a part of was pogs, which I played in about 2nd grade. And for those of you not familiar with pogs, they were little half-dollar sized cardboad discs that had cool designs on them. The object of ‘pogs’, the game, was to stack up your pogs all upside down, throw a slammer at the pogs, and any pogs that landed right side up, you got to keep. Then, your opponent would do the same until all of the pogs were gone.
Well, instead of playing pogs, the majority of the time, me and my friends just ended up collecting them. I had my mom running around all over South Florida going to the far-reaches of the pog universe to come up with the newest and coolest slammers and pogs. All of which were stored securely in the pog containers.
After I got tired of simply ‘collecting’ pogs, I got into Magic cards or Magic the Gathering. The majority of dorks and geeks know what game I’m talking about, and now, we can only speak about it in acronyms, MTG, when we’re around females or non-dorks, to avoid looking like losers.
So Magic is a really complex game, and it requires a lot of skill and strategy. First, you have to buy all of these cards, then, you have to make a deck of about 40-60 cards that are optimized for play. Then, if you’re really good, you’ll enter into tournaments, do really well, but end up losing to some 30-year-old who owns like $5k in cards and can just lay the smackdown on you, simply because he has the best cards. So as you, and your 30 year old opponent go home with your moms, you realize, there must be another way.
So then I moved on to Star Wars cards. Now you’re probably thinking I’m a total loser/dork, playing all of these fantasy, role playing games, and you’re probably assuming I later transitioned into Dungeons & Dragons — not true at all.
You see… I really like competition, and I like to play games, and since my generation wasn’t so big on chess, it’s hard to find a game that is challenging, stimulating, and has some real competition, so I was forced into playing these games. Honestly, I could care less about the ‘lore’ or the story behind any of the characters or games, all I cared about was winning.
And that brings us to where we are today, I like to win. And by win, I mean, be better than my competition, make more money, be in better shape, better dressed, prettier girlfriend <3, etc.
Now, for me to ‘win’ at SEO, I need to learn as much as possible about the whole game, so I can be the resident expert at my company, as well as for my own blog.
To get me started, I’ve assembled a number of resources that will help me along the way:
