How the RIAA YouTube Suit Wins John McCain the White House

John McCain has been (rumored) sued by the RIAA for using a song without permission in a recent YouTube video, and with this suit, John McCain has an opportunity to turn his, so far, unfortunate run for the White House into a rallying cry for the average Joe and in turn land him in the Oval Office come 2009.

Here’s a joke for you. What do John McCain and a Grandma have in common?

Both grandmas and John McCain have been sued (rumored) by the RIAA. Whether it be Grandma’s affinity to The Ray Conniff Singers or John McCain’s desire to use Frankie Valli’s hit tune Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You in his latest campaign YouTube video.

RIAA Sues John McCain for Copyright Infringement

Apparently nobody is safe from the RIAA hammer, and even presidential candidate John McCain cannot avoid being sued by the RIAA for “illegally” using music content. For those conspiracy theorists out there, I think this case definitely puts a huge whole in the government trying to pull a fast one on the average American. But interestingly, it seems that the RIAA really does have all of the power, which really is the big problem here. The RIAA has been able to overtake one of the highest people in Government with this latest infringement letter and hopefully this will be a major tipping point in this legal battle between copyright owners and content producers/distributors.

Hopefully we’ll see John McCain take up this cause and try to campaign against the ridiculous $150,000 per song infringement costs put in place by the RIAA. Currently, for every song used illegally, infringers owe the content owner up to $150,000 per song, per infringement. So if the video was played 1,000 times, McCain would owe $150,000,000. Not a bad day’s work for the RIAA. Of course, the Frankie Valli estate would never see a dime of that, but that’s another issue.

John McCain and his RIAA Tipping Point

With this very public infringement, the RIAA might have crossed the line and messed with the wrong guy. John McCain has definitely taken a detour from his Straight Talk Express, but hopefully this will jump start his engine again and start taking action. There’s nobody easier to rally support against than greedy record-label execs. Like the Swift Boat Veterans of John Kerry’s unfortunate 2004 bid for the White House, McCain can get behind this RIAA suit and make huge strides.

Picking on the cruel or strange is a common political trick. Whether it be african-americans during the early 1900s or communists or the homosexuals (more recently), the RIAA are just as easy to pick for an easy target. They are “elitists” looking to screw the “everyman” and if John McCain wants a chance to win the White House, he better start taking up the cause of the little guy.

Will we see John McCain take up this cause? Most likely not, as the days slip by, and John McCain focuses on following, awkwardly, women in the grocery store. But hopefully, one can, he actually takes a stand for injustice here and turns this into a true Democratic process where both sides have legitimate issues, and can really cause positive change for the country.
