Looking for a Web 2.0 Job on FriendFeed? Use Your Blog As a Reference


I spoke to a professional recruiter the other day who’s seeing his job being phased out due to technology and web 2.0. He’s looking to move into a Ning-like social network to help him with recruiting, staying current, and offering a scalable solution for employers.

Competing for jobs in the web 2.0 world is an intense battle. The information gap is shortening and more and more qualified people are competing for a shrinking number of jobs. Standing out is difficult, and you get so few impression points you need to make sure you get noticed.

I started the Web 2.0 jobs room on FriendFeed as an experiment to see if I could help employees find jobs and employers find employees, for free, on a new social-media platform. It’s been pretty successful with ~150 members, and over 30 jobs posted.

In the group are hiring managers as well as potential employees. For the prospective employees, it’s a great opportunity to get your face infront of hiring managers in an ideal setting. Two particular users took this opportunity and made sure to capitalize on social-media marketing by featuring their blog in their “shared link”.

Resume is So Web 1.0

In this day an age, having a killer resume is only one part of getting hired. Employers want to see that you have an outside passion, that you can take nothing and turn it into something. If you go home everyday and crank out a couple insightful blog posts, you’re going to look better to employers than the “other guy,” who just likes to talk up his resume, past achievements, etc.

If you’re looking to work in a startup, and have no experience, you damn well better have a blog or a personal website to backup your resume. Coming into a new company, people want to see what you’ve done before, and if you’re fresh out of school, a blog is the best way to start making a name for yourself and give an employer a reason to take a chance on you.
