My Macbook Air Lives: Amex Digital Trumps Apple, Releases External Blu-Ray Drive

I sold my Macbook Air because it didn’t have a cd-drive, and I didn’t want to spend $100 on a DVD-drive. What is this? Amex Digital has released an external Blu-Ray drive? Now we’re talking.

The Amex Digital Blu-Ray drive comes in two flavors, black and white, I guess they didn’t realize Apple was refreshing the Macbook line.

Why No Blu-Ray In The New Macbooks?

Steve Jobs said they didn’t include a Blu-ray drive because the licensing was too expensive. Looking at this drive, the Apple drive costs $100 for the Macbook Air external drive.

So we subtract $100, and we’re at $179 for the Blu-Ray drive. Looking at the Macbook Pro, it starts at $1,999 with the next higher level going up to $2,499. Say Apple has the ability to bargain with Sony, and knock it down to $90 more. Would you pay $2,100 for a Blu-Ray equipped Macbook Pro?

I’d emphatically say yes, and with Blu-Ray to come eventually, I’d rather pay $100 now, than have to pay more for the same unit that has been slightly upgraded.
